Slide stuck! Help!

Hey everyone. Found this board while frantically searching the internet for help... hopefully you guys have some ideas. My safety was being a bit sticky so I removed the slide and disassembled the safetyto inspect it, found the problem and fixed it... but when I went to reassemble my greasy hands slipped off the slide and I somehow got the slide jammed. It looks as if the hold open is jammed upward and against the firing pin area... any ideas? Suggestions? Hit it with a hammer? Haha It's jammed up pretty solid. Won't slide back or forth at all.

I might try tapping it with a plastic hammer, but nothing steel. Even a block of wood but nothing hard. What you are trying to do is unstick not wedge it more. If you tap it one direction and it doesn't free it's self, try a different direction. If you hit it hard, you run the risk of springing the slide or damaging something. A light touch and you should be fine.

I feel your frustration. Same thing happened to me 3 times while changing the hammer spring from stock to 18# to 20#. I just grabbed the slide with a cloth (torn t-shirts I have) and just kept lifting, pulling back, and shaking it with my left hand at the same time I pulled down on the grips with my right hand until it released. Make sure the trigger guard is disengaged (lowered) for disassembly. It eventually will release. WARNING - you may get the urge to throw it against something. Also make sure there are no family members or pets around you due to language and rage.

Try using a pair of leather gloves to pull back and up on the slide.

It may be hung up on the slide stop lever which you see peeking out under the slide on the left side which has some play in it and can move outward from the frame during reassembly causing the slide to hang up on it.

This has happened to me on several occasions.

I now make sure the lever is seated against the frame and tilt the frame over during assembly of the slide so gravity helps to keep it in place.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Oh and welcome to the forum Matt.

Just want to echo what Curly and OG17 said, as well as adding a technique that may help.

1) Ensure the Trigger Guard is out of the way. Maybe use a dry soda cap, put it in top side against the Frame. That way you know the Trigger Guard won't fall into place while you are trying to work on it, also it will prevent the frame from being marred up.

2) Tight fitting Leather gloves are your friend. They will give you much better grip for getting it unstuck.

3) When trying to manipulate the Slide, many simply Pull with their Left hand. This is fine. But when it's stuck like this you'll need more force. Try also Pushing outward with your Right hand. This Push/Pull motion often adds the extra force needed to manipulate a difficult Slide.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I took it into work this morning, clamped the slide in a vice (don't worry I used a towel to make sure I didn't damage it) and gave the frame a tap with a dead blow. Took the safety back out once the slide was unstuck and took a file too some edges to fix my sticky safety too.

Glad you got it working again. After I posted before, I remembered having the same problem with mine.
