Hey all! This is my first post as I just recently received my p64 after a lot of shopping. It works decently enough for raccoons and coyote but recently I've been running into a lot of big ugly hogs and I'm wondering if the little makarov has enough oomph to keep me safe when I'm out working on the ranch. Any recommended loads for pig defense? Or do I need to just pony up and get that delta elite I've always wanted?

Ever wrestled one of them critters?

I'm wondering if a gun that old would be able to safely (for gun & shooter) handle higher pressure loads made today? Underwood Ammo has a 9X18 hard cast lead flat nose that might do the trick: Technical Information

Caliber: 9x18mm (9mm Makarov)
Bullet Weight: 115 Grain
Bullet Style: Hardcast Flat Nose 21 BHN

Ballistics Information:

Muzzle Velocity: 1000 fps

But it might be HARD on a 40+ yr old gun ...

I like the idea of a hardcast heavy bullet but I would sure hate to mess up my gun... I wonder if anyone here has tried that stuff in their p64.

I know the gun is/was designed for in the range of 95gr bullets. 115 might be too much 'cause I've seen comments here where most say they wouldn't (or shouldn't) shoot anything exceeding the 95gr bullet by much. Plus, Underwood makes some HOT stuff so I'd be a bit concerned for the gun no matter what.

Maybe others with more info on this topic will chime in. Hot ammo is available. Question is - do you want to risk it?

Well if I were to go after pigs and used a pistol as backup I would much rather have my tokarev in 7.62x25 and mil surp ammo. My Yugo m57 has 9 rounds and would think ( and hope) that would be enough. HTH.

Probably be good for finishing a wounded, down animal. Not one active and pissed. No, nope. For that, #1: don't run you primary weapon dry, or at least practice fast mag changes, and #2: backup is deployed only if #1 is not feasible. Like a jam or something. Then for backup, my choice is my Ruger .454 Super Redhawk Alaskan.

Buy the 1911 for the hogs, Dang things get mean if wounded, 45acp or even 10mm carry heck of a whop, The 9x18 is a sweet little round, Am not putting it down, But a 300 + pound razorback is a allot of mean coming at high speed, & they have no remorse.. Just saying.

I bought the ten a ria 1911... Anyone have any experience with these?
