New Member - New P64 owner - Jamming issues

Post by kilbie »

I need some help and I am so thankful for this forum. What a great resource!
I have taken my 1972 P-64 to the range 3 times and all 3 times it has done the exact same thing. I have 2 magazines. The gun cycles through both magazines without any problems. After I reload the magazines the problems begin. The gun jams on the 3rd magazine. I have to release the magazine and then clear the jam. I load the same magazine and am able to finsih shooting. I then load the 4th magazine and it jams again.
I have read this forum since I started looking at purchasing on of these guns, so I followed advice and cleaned the heck of it and the magazines. I have used different ammunition each time I have gone to the range.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm a little confused - is it jamming while dry cycling or while shooting?

While shooting. Usually the 2nd round of the magazine. The picture above shows the jam after I shot 1 round from the 3rd magazine.

Sorry for the confusion. The gun is definitely jamming while I am in the process of shooting. I am wondering if it has something to do with the magazines. As I mentioned I can shoot all 6 rounds out of both magazines without any problems. After that the gun jams while shooting. Its as if 12 shots is all I get of troublefree shooting, then the gun turns into a jam machine.

I understand that ,I would think it has to be something you are doing , are you touching the mag release in any way while shooting the third string and the forth string ,
have you changed the hammer spring to lighter than 18 lb.

Have you changed the recoil spring at all? In the picture, it looks like extraction is happening, but the next round is getting caught up on the way into the chamber. Maybe the recoil spring is getting worn out and starts failing with use. Maybe there is something going on under the slide or around the chamber. Pictures of those areas might also help others in assisting you.

I have not changed anything on this gun since buying it. Here are some pics. Best I can do at night. I may be able to do better during the day.
Thanks again for any advice.

Have you tried loading fewer rounds to see if you have the same problem over multiple mags?

Are they the correct magazines for this year?

Also, I highly recommend polishing the feed ramp.

Just a theory - Are you using lacquered ammo? If so, it is possible the heat from the barrel (especially if rapid firing) is melting the coat and gumming-up the feed ramp.

Kilbie, welcome. I have had this issue a few times myself. What worked for me was disassembling the magazine, thoroughly cleaning the inside and then running a cotton ball with a few drops of oil on it through the magazine. these mags get really dirty really quick which is why I now clean mine every time I clean my weapon. Since I started doing that the problem disappeared. hope this helps. Stay safe.

Shoot first, Shoot straight, and hit what you're aiming at, if you can do these things and have six rounds of ammo, you'll have two thirds more than you need to prevail.
