FMJ or HP in 9x18?

Post by dalek »

If you were to use, or are using, the P64 or any other 9x18 handgun for CCW, would you pick FMJ or HP? And why?

Well for me,I use fmj for my .380's as I don't think it has the power to make use of HPs,IMOHO. As the 9x18 is substantially more powerful than the .380,HP's are a viable option. I choose to use fmj's in my P64 because I am confident in my shooting ability to get center of mass shots, and opt for penetration. Again all IMOHO.

FMJ for winter and HP for summer, except my CZ-82 which keeps HP's all year round due to mag capacity.

Why not load every other round with fmj?

Because of FMJ's further penetration through winter clothing which, where I live, can be rather thick. In fact most of the time I don't carry my 9x18 pistols in the winter as 1) I can conceal a larger caliber gun (I am somewhat slight of build) and 2) I want the extra penetration a larger caliber such as 9mm or .45 affords because of thicker clothing.

JHPs for me in the P64. In the 9mm Ruger that I keep handy @ home(15 round mag), the 1st 4 rounds are JHP "home defense" ammo, followed by 11 rounds of FMJ. JMHO.

I carry Hornady critical defense in both my Mak and P-64. In the winter I use Buffalo Bore flat points.
