You're really bringing back memories now! I have often recalled the story that Skeeter told that when he was maybe 12 years old, walking back home from the pond where he had been shooting frogs with his .32-20, being stopped by two police officers who inspected the frogs and the revolver. He just knew that he was going to jail. One officer said "Nice frogs" and the other said "Nice grips". Then he was on his way. I thought about that story many times when I worked in law enforcement and it had quite an effect on me as to dealing with armed citizens. Maybe not 12-year olds, but normal law abiding adult citizens, anyway. Luckily our Sheriff's philosophy was that we were sworn to protect and serve the citizens of this county, not to hastle them. "They're on our side. Don't bother 'em 'cause they carry a gun for protection. We want the bad guys' guns!"

I spent 22 years believing that to "protect & serve" was my job. I get real upset when I watch "cops" and they have to throw everyone on the ground. You have to earn respect, you can't demand it.

No problem and nothing meant by it. I just wanted to mention it as we were discussing the correct terminology. You are right about the 1911

One more. At least in my opinion pistols have grips hence the term pistolgrip and rifles have stocks and once again Ed Brown and Bill Wilson call them grips, good enough for me.

At least the top three might be considered stocks.
Just discussing terminology and I hate seeing nubes get picked on.

For What It's Is Worth.......
The term grips/stocks, are both correct IMO, however, if you are a fancier or ardent admire of Smith & Wesson, then the term stock is correct. For over a century S&W has called them stocks, be it a revolver or pistol [semi-auto] and their catalogs have persistently and specifically use the term stocks instead of grips.
As brought out in the 3rd Edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, "The reasons are unknown, but a guess might suppose a company desire to be technically correct and to further the Smith & Wesson image of outstanding quality. Judging from their consistency in calling them stocks for over a century, it seems clear the distinction must have been important to S&W"
Myself being a S&W fancier for nearly 40 years, I prefer to call them stocks, however, [1] that does not make me correct or wrong but rather it's my choice, and [2] I don't condemn anyone that prefers to calls them grips. On the S&W forum, the majority of the older Smith members call them stocks, and the younger members call them grips.
FWIW, there's my $0.02 worth.

HOW TO TELL A NEWB IN FIRE ARMS
true better then thingy..
I was forced to stop at my favorite shop today and had to buy a set GRIPS for my Taurus 82 didnt like the wood stocks
now the point is we all agreed at the shop there were 6 other members of Guns anonymous there so that almost counts as a nation consensus right.
anyway if it is rubber ,nylon, plastic or other man made material it is a grip. If it is wood it is stock..
