catastrophic failure

Post by garry »

For all of the reloaders out there -- remember there is a "standard" for a reason!
A guy came into a store the other day to ask a favor. He had a S&W
- 629 that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range.
He said there was a loud "bang" when he tested his new "hot" loads and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. When the tweety birds cleared, this is what he saw.....

Thanks Guys! I have missed Y'all also! I have been playing in 4 bands and life has been a whirlwind for the last 9 months or so. Things are good here! I see several of you have really "spiced up" your collections! NIIIIICE stuff! I will get on here more often now that the cold weather is starting up! Still no new guns since the last posts. (sad) all of my money has gone towards new bass gear(amps, spkrs,etc...) but I do have my eye on that Argentine Mauser still! I hope to post pics when i get it. See You guys soon! G

WOW!

I feel bad for that guy and I hope he learned something.....

Can that be repaired, or is it a parts gun only now?

Seems a shame.

Norm, have you seen this one yet?

The top strap on that revolver is gone, it is a paperweight now.

Mark
I have seen it before , that's from using a fast burning powder such as bullseye or clays and double charging, I don't like using fast burning powders, still don't why the other two cases went off

Norm could be maybe from chain firiing.. maybe the bullets were not seated right or crimped and they loosened up enough to expose or leak some powder ,kinda link old percussion guns would do.. not really all that knowalable to offer a opinion was just thinking aloud.. or the top load when fired exploded and caused the other 2 to go..

AL

the bullets could of jumped because of a bad crimp exposing the powder ,it sure looks like what's happen,
don't know for sure and probably never will

:'(

Looks like in the end to be only the waste of a really nice gun.

Wow, glad he wasn't (permanently) injured.

Regarding the other rounds, its quite possible they were set off, look at this failure of a Colt .44Mag Anaconda:
http://iris.nyit.edu/~bithead/anaconda/
In the story link, guy says that one round from the cylinder went downrange!

Just to be clear Gary, are you saying that the guy came in to your store with this gun or just reposting? This picture seems to be on every forum with a different story.
Heck, this guy says he blew it up at a range.

This guy says someone brought the same gun into their department for disposal.

Guys have you seen the pictures of the guy that was at the range?? There was a series. The first one showed the guy about to fire his rifle, then you see he still has a laser boresight in the bore. I can remember saying to myself 'Surely he's not going to fire that?' The next picture the barrel is petaled out and bent back. The last is the guy being hauled off by EMT'S. The lesson for all of us is, no matter how many times we've done something. You have to respect the dangers of what you're doing and not get in a hurry
