is it better to leave the magazines full or empty while not in use or storing.
thinking about spring strength and tension?

It doesn't matter, really. There are a lot of people that will tell you to leave them empty but I have some, al beit not p64 mags, that have been loaded for years with no difference.

I believe the spring gets worn out by expanding and compressing over and over, not sitting dormant in 1 state.

You can either rotate magazines or load less than capacity. I change out magazines every few months. I believe most magazines will still function after being loaded for months or years. I'm still using WWII G.I. mags in my 1911 type .45's, I know three of them are original, they were issued to my dad in '42, I have kept all three with a full 7 rds in them for over a year from time to time and they still function flawlessly, the only real issue with most mags is keeping em clean if they are top drawer mags to start with

You know, this is something I never thought about. I have six springfield mags for my xd .40 and they are always full it's been at least a year since a couple made it out to the range.
