My 1968 P64

Post by rmeron »

I brought Her home today, got her all cleaned up,oiled,an 18# Wolff hammer spring and a 20# recoil spring.
One thing I noticed, this 1968 has a much better DA than my 1973,and since we had another 2-3 inches of snow today,a range trip was put off again,as soon as I can I'll get to do some shooting,I've also got a brand new in the box Makarov IJ70 in .380 ACP I want to sight in,paid $125.00 for Her.
I'm like a kid in a candy store :D :D :D :D

I just love new gun day around here. Good luck with the new P64. Where did you get it, if I may ask? Did it come from MCS?
A new Mak IJ 70 in .380 also! You my friend are living the high life.
I'm envious.

I got it from a local dealer, the importer is TG in Knox TN,the same as my 1973. The Mak I've had for about a month, but the weather has been so crappy just can't get to the range.

I have a 1974 version and would like to check out the difference between it and the round hammer older P64's. With the 74, I bought the spring kit from Makarov.com but was getting light hammer strikes with the 18# hammer spring, had to go up to a 20# hammer spring to fix the problem. To lighten the DA pull I then used a Dremel polishing kit and cleaned up the hammer strut and a few other surfaces. Seems ok now. After all that I use the single action on it. Keep us posted on range day. The IJ 70 should be a blast also. Pun intended. Does a .380 Mak shot much different than a 9X18 or do you know yet :)

That's interesting. I have a '67 round hammer and its DA pull is much worse than my three triangular hammer P-64s.

torpeau, Even before I changed out the hammer spring I could tell the DA trigger was lighter, but I'm not going to argue about it.

rmeron, I wasn't arguing with you.

Perhaps some of these P-64s were altered sometime before they were shipped to the US and I find that interesting. Granted my left hand is not as strong as my right, but I can barely use DA lefthanded on my round-hammered '67. Other possibilities, too.

torpeau,
I didn't mean to imply that you were,I was just suprised that the DA was nice before the spring change and I'm very happy,I thought all these were bears on DA.
Like you my left trigger finger is much weaker than my right but I have no problem with the 1968.

Hey guys, quite and interesting conversation. I have some that when first bought I couldn't pull the trigger on SA, but on 1 PA-63 and one P-64 it was gritty but the pull was bearable. I guess its all depending on the gun. After thinking about it none of these guns had the origional springs changed! Good luck.

Hey I have a 1969 P-64 and I think it is pretty tame the recoil also. Does anyone know did the plant in Poland change up the plans throughout the years and do we know was it planned or just the way things went under those circumstances? It seems to me from what I've read from all the folks that there wasn't a strong consistancy I am very curious!

My 1969 is tame on the recoil, too. I'd heard all these horror stories, and it just doesn't seem that bad with that one.

Check with Norm Sutton. Somewhere posted is a complete history of the P-64 and I think he can guide you to it. Good luck!!!! I don't have any problem shooting the P-64 for about 32 rds.

I was doing something on my 73 p64 and noticed that on the caliber marking on slide it just has 9mm, no mak or 9x18 anywhere on it .I had never noticed that before duh. on my other 2 64s they are properly marked has anyone else ever seen one marked like this. by the way the reg. 9mm wont fit in it it is the same innards as the others..

anjdrifter - I think that in that era, behind the Iron Curtain, 9mm meant 9x18. We call it 9x18 because 9mm here and now means 9x19.
