new kid on the block

Carefully, with calipers if you can, compare the width of the gap between feed lips, front AND rear, with the 'good' mag. Sounds like it may have been dropped and the lips bent.

Price check on "Aisle 64"

The SAME vendor, at the same SW Ohio show, that sold me mine a year and a half ago for $139, had three more today, same $139! No, I didn't buy, the safe won't close now! Also seen, "pristine" duo-tone PA-63s, two mags, $175. Is this a great country, or what?

Your first P-64, when?

Abwehr - Yeah, when I first saw one and asked what it was (I own a Mak), gunshow tablemaster said "It's a Makarov" Spent a few minutes making sure they knew it wasn't a Mak, which was probably overkill, since I took it away from them on the spot. Same people have had more of same at shows ...

PA-63's are being sold now - Opinions?

I've had one for years. Very strong DA pull, somewhat picky about HP ammo, alloy frame (light weight) makes it a 'mule' to shoot with anything above 95 g, but a bargain at that price (I paid that for mine, with ONE mag) Parts available from GPC/Numich under "Kassnar". Thumbrest left grip, ...

Your first P-64, when?

Dave - I can't believe it's been a year and a half plus, where does the time go? Sounds like you're a 'frequent user'? I can't let myself get two of anything, unless it's the 'same' gun in a different caliber (CZ -52s, AMT Backups, little Sterlings, etc), the safe won't close now! Used to do "N...

Your first P-64, when?

When I could not remember (a common problem at my age) how I worked over my P-64, (in order to answer some of your questions), I went back to my log to see when I first got it. July 24, 2004. Saw it, bought it! How about the rest of you 'old-timers'? When did you first see one? Buy the first one? Ju...

Trigger harder at the end of Pull?

Novgarod: (Govarit paruski?) I can't do pix, sorry. I removed the trigger bar and polished both sides of it where it contacts the frame (inside) and the slide (outside) Also the two leftmost surfaces at the tail, where it can contact the mainspring strut and the side of the hammer. To find the real ...

Good Range Day

Take the slide off your P-64 or your Mak, put a loaded mag in, and notice how the top round is just a little below "co-axial" with the chamber. Compare this with a few others and you'll notice that the top round is further down and the feed ramp is much steeper. My Mak will usually chamber...

Recoil Spring Study

Saands - I couldn't agree with you more. There's just too many variables in this spring business to be hacking away at other springs, trying to obtain a mechanical fit, and hoping the other parameters fall into place somehow. Also, lets not forget that for the same length, a flat-faced spring has a ...

H & K Recoil Spring

After some thought, I agree with saands comment about NOT cutting a coil at a time and going one more for good measure. If you can get it together, you've got the thickness of the slide stop lug as a margin.

whqat is the # rating for the original mainspring?

I went to the Century spring site and read their FAQs, etc. Thanks. An experienced gunsmith I spoke to today agrees with my current belief: The 'poundage' refers to the force needed to completely perform the motion in question (slide full back, DA trigger pull, etc) in that particular gun, subject o...

Recoil Spring Study

Abwehr - Several things I left out in the interest of keeping it short: Mak bbl length is 70 mm vs 60 for P-64 and the compressed length at full travel is 68 vs 78. Also, both springs are flat faced, tight at breech end and slightly flared at muzzle, so if cut, must cut breech end. Since I am not ch...

Revealing my ignorance . . .

OOPS! I think I should have thought this through more carefully before posting, what? Of course slide and brass behavior should be the same for all shots, DOH! It's slide and brass behavior before and after mainspring change, right? I'm crawling back in my hole now.......

Recoil Spring Study

To help me understand the recoil spring question, I measured three pistols: P-64, PA-63, & Makarov. Altho my methods were crude (fish scale, postage scale, ruler, etc) the numbers are at least valid for comparisons and discussion. I've drawn no conclusions from these numbers yet, but want to pos...

Revealing my ignorance . . .

After some thought: If the mainspring change affects slide behavior in recoil, would we expect to see the brass from a SA first shot fly somewhat differently than subsequent shots? Has anyone moticed this? I'm going to get somebody to watch carefully next time I'm at the outdoor range.
