Re: the truth about trimming 9mm luger to 9x18 mak?

+1 on the Lee case length gauge. You need the caliber specific gauge (comes with the shell holder), the lock stud, and the cutter (or preferably, the cutter with ball grip). http://www.leeprecision.com/html/catalog/casecon.html Go with the 9mm Luger stud and file down the pin as needed to get to len...

Re: the truth about trimming 9mm luger to 9x18 mak?

Cutting down 9mm luger brass 1mm to make 9x18 brass is a no-no and shouldn't be done if you don't know what you're doing. Cutting off 1mm is not all there is to it. The key is to remove the taper from the 9mm Luger case. If you start with sized 9mm Luger brass (either factory new or once fired then ...

Re: 9x18 case length limits

My Lee gauge when new cut cases to .703. .700 is the shortest permissible length, .713 the max case length for Mak cases. After cutting about 200 cases I found the Lee gauge was cutting cases too short, and they were getting progressively shorter. The tip of the gauge was mushrooming. I called Lee a...

Re: Final Range 116grs.

That is just awesome Frank! I've been curious for some time about loading the Rim Rock 116 grain bullet with W231 or AA #2. I'm glad you took the time to work this up!! It really looks like a stellar loading. I am looking forward to what you manage to come up with on the 93 grain Missouri Bullet. I'...

Re: Extractor, recoil spring, or does my hand loading suck?

Doesn't seating the bullet too deep contribute to overpressure conditions? When a specific load specifies an OAL, I treat that as an absolute minimum. Seating longer up to max is OK, but less than that reduces case volume and causes overpressure. Am I missing something?

Re: Extractor, recoil spring, or does my hand loading suck?

Cool, looks like I have a few things to try! Different powder - anybody have the HS-6 data from Speer #14 they could share? Case differences - I saw Starline Mak cases at the last gun show $18/100. I may give those a try. Seating the bullet deeper - the minimum oal for that AA#2 load is .955. I'll g...

Would some kind person with a Speer #14 manual send me the HS-6 powder data for the 9x18 Makarov? Much appreciated!

Extractor, recoil spring, or does my hand loading suck?

I've been hand loading for my P64 using cut down 9mm Luger cases, AA #2 and the Meister 95 grain lead bullets, .965 OAL. I have the 22lb recoil spring on my P64, never shot it with the stock spring. So at 3.6 grains (the starting load) of AA #2 I get failure to go into battery pretty consistently. T...

Re: Range Test with 116gr 9X18Mak bullet

I'm glad to see some load development happening around the 116 grain Rim Rock bullet. There is little if any data on this bullet right now and I think it has some interesting possibilities.

How is the Unique powder working under this bullet? I know it burns pretty dirty in the lighter Mak loads.

Re: Loading the 9x18mm w/ Luger brass

Before I received my replacement 9x18Mak Lee case length gauge I made a .010" thick washer from the side of a spent 22lr case that fits between the gauge and cutter face to make up the loss of length from wear on the tip. FWIW the tip on the Lee gauge used to be a separate hardened pin but now ...

Re: Loading the 9x18mm w/ Luger brass

I sort before I dump them in the tumbler. That way everything I get out of the tumbler on that go-around I know to be cut down Mak. I do have to re-mark the case heads every go-around because the sharpie wears off. But fortunately I lose enough brass that I end up making a bunch of new ones, so I ha...

Re: Loading the 9x18mm w/ Luger brass

I mark my cut down Luger case heads with a sharpie. I haven't had any issues sorting out my brass yet.... :D Given the distance my P64 and CZ-82 like to throw brass, my recovery rate on my cases (has been as low as 50% and as high as 90% with extensive looking), and the availablility of once fired 9...

Re: New Sog P-64 and holster choice

I picked up a Kholster tuckable IWB in the "small moon" Walther PPK variety. It did need a few minutes with a hairdryer to the kydex to get the p64 to fit just right but it sure disappears in that holster.
