FYI on mil-surp ammo ...

No ... no problem ... the Mann Device (complete Springfield 03a3 action in pristine condition and the barrel with a pristine bore and very rough surface finish) was $500 from the CMP plus 22.95 shipping. The Stock blank was $44 from Cali'co hardwoods. The scope bases and rings were about $20 at Midw...

FYI on mil-surp ammo ...

Well ... I finally got a few coats of BLO on this stock and one coat of BLO/BeesWax/CitriSol ... I'm pretty happy with the results. As promised, here are the pics ... it's a 308 with a 6-20x50 scope and a 22" barrel ... when I looked at the pics, I thought that it looked like a 16" barrel ...

FYI on mil-surp ammo ...

Cool beyond belief will be if I can duplicate what some have claimed in terms of accuracy out of this project ... cloverleaf patterns at 200yds .... a quarter on my desk with three 308" holes in it would qualify :) I know that some exaggerate excessively, so I won't hold my breath waiting for T...

FYI on mil-surp ammo ...

I'm on the road, but pics will follow. The Mann Device is a Springfield 03a3 action with an insanely thick barrel ... 1.3-1.5 inch diameter ... that the US military would mount in a fixture to test the accuracy of rifle ammo that they bought. You can buy them through the ODCMP ... The stock on mine ...

FYI on mil-surp ammo ...

I am building a "high accuracy" rifle out of a Mann Device (a 1.25" bull barrel on a 03a3 receiver that the military used to test the accuracy of the ammo lots it procured). I just finished carving the stock ... enough to shoot the rifle ... and I went out to the 100yd line and almost...

BSA Red Dotted my Plinker!

1/8" groups at 200 ... those must be one shot groups ::)

Sounds like a nice rifle, but sometimes we exaggerate just a little in this sport :)

RELOADING

I agree with almost everything that Norm's post says, but I will throw out an option if the $269 price of the Lyman kit is prohibitive: Donning NOMEX before suggesting a kit based on a Lee press ... :D For just under $100 you can get the following list of gear from Midway at their retail prices ... ...

Nervous about C&R....

Remember that you are dealing with the service part of the ATF ... these folks seem to understand that they are a service organization and my interactions with them have always made me feel like they were just trying to do their jobs well. Sometimes they can't (won't) give an answer as quickly as yo...

OT: "made" at work today

It's good to hear that things worked out ... and with a little good hard work at the cafe, your references will be good enough that no one would ever venture to ask about your stint at Sam's ...

Be safe ...

Newbie bought a P-64

On small rust spots, I have used Flitz polish with a soft rag and it buffs the rust out without taking the blue off ... How? I have NO idea, but it does smell like ammonia IIRC and that probably has something to do with its success. Some P64's can handle the 22# recoil spring without any mods to the...

I think that the CMP lot, in general, were well cared for by the Italians. From what I saw on the CMP forum, the metal was almost always really nice but there was an element of luck in how good the wood was. I saw some that looked PRISTINE as received ... I struck out on my wood, but $100 took compl...

Airsoft for Quickdraw Practice?

I have used Airsoft pistols to introduce people to shooting ... at 15ft, they are accurate enough to teach the fundamentals of sight alignment and safe gun handling. The triggers tend to be unrealistically light and the lack of recoil makes double-taps unrealistically easy to perform well. I prefer ...

That's a sweet one ... I just got my first Carbine (an Inland from the CMP that was recently returned from Italy) and I love it ... the wood was cracked near the bayo lug, though, from a bayo lug that was forced on in spite of one of the tabs not being folded over enough. I got some of the new CMP w...

There's a good page at the CMP site on military finishes: http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/wo ... rticle.htm

Sounds like the multitude of manufacturers makes it a little less than certain which finish was actually used ... although there are certainly some generalities ...

C&R question

I know Traders ... I found their prices to be hit or miss ... but they have a pretty good inventory ... better than Blue Ridge, but BRSS's changes a lot and they don't mind ordering for you at pretty reasonable prices/markups. All the guys at BRSS are friendly, so I used to drive right past Trader's...
