have you looked at where the trigger bar catches the spur on the hammer. i had one where the previous owner must have filed down the edge on the bar. so that when the trigger was pulled you could feel when the bar was tryng to catch the spur, but it would let go.

i guess i'm not sure what the safety detent does. i think that it is for keeping tension on the safety mech., but am really unsure.

It sounds like your safety is dropping part way and popping back up once the slide slams forward. This is why I don't fully trust the safety/decocker on these...it seems if you could flick the safety on and back off really quick, the hammer could fall and hit the firing pin.
