Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Just to close the loop here in case anyone is still curious. I finally managed to replace the ejector spring -- took some trial and error since none of the springs in the Wolff heavy duty package was a perfect match for the original. Plus, of course, getting it cut to the exact right length took a f...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Thanks! Won't know for sure till the new spring arrives but I'm definitely encouraged.

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Hold everything! Forget what I just said! I think we may have a breakthrough. While trying to decide whether to order new extractor parts, I decided to go ahead and disassemble the parts first to see if I could even get it apart in the first place. When I finally got it disassembled, both the extrac...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Thanks, snailman, but I've now had stovepiping with three different brands of ammo: Fiocchi, RWS, and Prvi Partizan. This weekend it happened five times out of about 70 rounds. I've started logging them carefully to try to find a pattern, but I'm seeing none. It's now happened to two different shoot...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Yes, I did. With 19# hammer spring and 22# recoil spring. Shot about 70 rounds of Fiocchi ammo and had one stovepipe out of the whole session. Better than before, but still not perfect. The chamber, extractor and all adjacent parts were absolutely squeaky clean. No significant marks on the stovepipe...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

A new three-pack of various recoil springs arrived yesterday from Wolff. It's probably just my imagination, but the new 18# recoil spring in the pack certainly seems a little stiffer than the original spring, which I'm assuming was supposed to be 18# as well. It's hard to detect without the right eq...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Thanks, weasel, good advice. I didn't realize the loss of finish on the front of the trigger guard was unusual. I thought everybody had it. New recoil springs have been shipped. When they get here I think I'll start experimenting again till I get the right combination of hammer spring and recoil spr...

Yep, that's always a possibility. Can't rule it out completely.

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Thanks, snailman. Good advice. I've checked the extractor and breech face very carefully, and cleaned and cleaned some more, including the chamber. All looks okay. The only possible exception is a very, very small nick on the outside perimeter of the barrel, which I understand must have happened whe...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Thanks for all the great advice, everyone. The more I read it, the more I'm beginning to doubt my theory. On the other hand, I still haven't found a likely alternative. I checked the extractor very carefully, and everything in the chamber and extractor area appears to be clean and operating smoothly...

Re: Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

Hi Hoosier, It sounds sort of "out there," I know, but here's my theory: If I understand the operation of a blowback pistol correctly, the slide is "blown back" by the force of the powder igniting. When it does, the slide pushes back against resistance from the recoil spring, but...

Stovepiping -- could new hammer spring be to blame?

I have a question for the more savvy P64 users on this board. I've had my P64 some months now, but only recently started having problems with stovepiping -- a spent shell that hangs up in the ejector port. It doesn't happen often, maybe once or twice per 50 round box. But, of course, once is too oft...

Don't know how you did it. You obviously have more patience (or more dexterity) than I do. Congratulations!

Re: New guy here

Regarding the safety detent plunger and spring, I recently replaced mine and I agree: it's impossible to manipulate all those tiny parts if the spring and plunger aren't held together as one unit. Even then, you have to hold your mouth just right to get all the pieces lined up... If you look closely...
