Re: 1974 P-64 - Middle safety position

Marty, You're very welcome. Some folks advocate using a Demmel tool on it and smoothing off the rough edges. When I took mine apart I couldn't find any rough edges and I always try and save the cutting and slicing for last as I tend to get a little carried away and once you cut it of you can't put i...

Re: 1974 P-64 - Middle safety position

Marty, You can find Lucas gun oil at most any Autozone if you have one near you. What I found out was that the Lucas Assembly lube was what made the greatest difference. It's heavy, almost like pancake syrup, and generally tends to stay where you put it. It's actually designed for putting motors tog...

Re: 1974 P-64 - Middle safety position

I'll catch hell for saying this and I DO NOT recommend anyone doing this. That being said, the P64, or I should say my P64 at least, does in fact have a detente between safe and fire. My safety has a very noticeable half way point. It's a 1977. I was reading on another website that it could be carri...

Re: P64 design

BigDuke, I have to agree with you in part, the P64 wouldn't be my first choice for a duty weapon. During my 20+ years with the PD the minimum barrel length for a duty weapon was 3.5 ". That being said, you have to take into account the culture and environment that these weapons were designed to...

Re: P-64 Extended Mag Release

I don't want anyone to misunderstand. The craftsmanship and the workmanship of the part is well above excellent. I just think, in certain situations, it can be a liability but then again, that's just one man's opinion and you know what they say about opinions <G>. I was a little bit harsh in my crit...

Re: P-64 Extended Mag Release

Gary, I think it's catching in clothing and I've also had it pop lose when riding in the car as i used to carry mine right in the middle of my back. Probably wouldn't be an issue now as it's winter and I carry it in my shoulder holster anyway but I've gotten used to the old mag release and I feel mu...

Re: P-64 Extended Mag Release

What they are good for is an unintended magazine release, They put those up inside the handle for a reason. I've already tried one of those and spent most of my time picking my mags up off of the floor. Do yourself a favour and leave well enough alone. It doesn't take that long to to learn to use th...

Re: Cannot Remove Slide

I've found that when I have trouble removing the slide from a new pistol, taking the grinder ever so slightly to the front end of the recoil spring, just enough to make a small flat spot, greatly aids in removal of the slide. Also leaving it on safety gives you a little extra grip. Welcome to the gr...

Re: new to the p64.

Welcome rskahle,
Those are pretty much my requirements as well. The the P64 has been my concealed carry since I left the PD and I have 100 % confidence in it. I think you will too. Congratulations on getting a good deal. It's worth every penny you paid and more.
