Re: Want to get started on making a holster
Oh, I knew I had another question. I only just remembered it. My new gun is a Beretta clone. That means it has an open slide. I know to tape a dowel rod to make the sight channel, but do I need to also use cardboard or something to simulate the slide when forming? If I don't, I assume I'll have some...

Re: Want to get started on making a holster
I feel like I should be hearing that classic TV trombone, "Wah, wah." Oh well, the stuff I have is thick, stiff, and paid-for. It'll do just fine. Though I do now doubt the local leather source now. I know there is a local holster-maker who buys from him, but he buys the thinner stuff, 4oz...

Re: Want to get started on making a holster
A photo would be most helpful, but I'll offer this based on your observations: First, I don't use soapy water to mold my holsters. I use straight hot water from the tap, unless it's a heavily dyed piece, then I use the same hot water with 1 single drop of Dawn per gallon of water. This just breaks ...

Re: Want to get started on making a holster
I look forward to seeing it! If it's 9oz, it shouldn't be 'crazy' thick and make you feel like it will be a bear to work. If it's really that thick and heavy, then it's probably thicker than 9oz, which would be overkill. The guy assured me it was 9oz, and I'm pretty sure he even measured it right i...

Re: Want to get started on making a holster
Yearly update. Just got some thick leather for round 2. It's 9 oz stuff. Crazy thick. Should be really rough to work with. I think the end result will really be worth it, though. Still deciding on a design for this one. Considering the Askins Avenger again, but I've worn that pancake this whole time...

Re: Going to Chrony a few different rounds
Shorty, if you don't have an energy calculator available, you can do it yourself on a regular calculator or paper. V=velocity W=bullet weight V^2 x W -------- 450400 In the case of the Silver Bear HP they are going 1011 FPS and I think they're 94 grains. So, 1011x1011= 1022121...... 1022121x94= 960...

Re: Decocker-Firing pin issue
Am I crazy or have there been a lot of these popping up lately? I wonder if there's an issue with a specific importer/dealer getting these with decocker issues.
EDIT: No, those weren't decocker issues in the other threads, they were disconnect issues. ..ignore me.

Re: Firearm finishes
Yeah, that cerakote looks alright, but it just doesn't do it for me. Like a polymer frame, I don't have anything against it; I just don't like it.

Re: Firearm finishes
Boris, The link you posted to the nitriding place is for H&M - they're used by S&W and Beretta for black nitriding. I'd use them in a heartbeat. Had no idea they were such "bigshots." They were mentioned on a local forum by one of the members. I may contact them to see what they'l...

Re: p 64
HI, Thanks for the reply. It shoots and feeds normally in single mode. Empty gun fires in double action mode. Gun is cleaned as recomended. With a round in the chamber and hammer down it will not cock the hammer, the slide is fully foreward and I tapped it with a rubber hammer to make sure it is in...

Re: p 64
Sounds like it may be failing to go into battery. Try pushing the slide forward with your thumb to see if it moves. Also, does it work in single action with a round chambered? As in, cock the hammer and pull the trigger? If not, I would definitely think failure to go into battery. But I'm no expert....

Re: Firearm finishes
Wow, that's a good amount of information! I agree regarding Home Hot Blueing. Seems awfully scary and it's not really the most often-suggested option anyhow. I did forget about Parkerizing and Phosphating. Since I typed this up, I found a company that does black nitride(ing?). I've only seen one per...

Re: AS SEEN ON TV!
Carriage undercoating is about $5 or 6 for a large can. You can find it at O'Reilly's and Autozone. http://www.autogeek.net/under-coating.html http://www.eastwood.com/ew-rubberized-undercoating-aerosol-18-oz.html I've seen some people do the same thing with various plasti-dip sprays and rubber spra...

Re: looking for a 45
Just throwing it out there, but Sarco has RIA 1911's going for under $400. You could even build one from their parts kits and "a la carte" RIA frames for just under $350.
